  1. What a rewarding life you have!!! Your blog got my interest since my husband is from Puerto Rico, and I did studied at the UPR in Mayaguez many moons ago. In addition, I want to inquire more on how my 18 years old son can get involve in the Program PROMISE. He is a freshmen at Columbia University, fluent in Spanish and English, and has great passion for math and science. He is contemplating in pursuing Applied Math as a major. My son, Carlos, is coming home next weekend and I want to share the inf. with him. Have you try tostones rellenos con camaraones o carne molida? Or Salmorejo de jueyes? Have a good day!!! • Hello Leonor! Thank you very much for your comment! Yes, I am being blessed with some truly wonderful opportunities. I was at the Rio Piedras campus today and will be in Mayaguez in 2 weeks.

PROMISE is an AGEP program, one of 22 AGEPs around the country.

There is a Central New York-Puerto Rico AGEP. Here is the website:
      http://agep.syr.edu/

Here are all of the contacts:
      http://www.pathwaystoscience.org/programhub.asp?sort=AGE-Syracuse-CNYAGEP&subsort=contacts

But if your son is 18, and since your husband is from PR, and since he is interested in applied math, he should look into the LSAMP program. PROMISE and all other AGEP programs are for graduate students. LSAMP programs, also sponsored by the National Science Foundation, are for undergraduate students who are interested in STEM fields – Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

Columbia doesn’t have an LSAMP program, but he may consider asking a nearby school if he can be an affiliate. Some LSAMP programs, like our Meyerhoff program in Maryland, allow affiliates. By the way, here is UMBC’s Applied Math program:
      http://www.math.umbc.edu/index.htm

And here is the Meyerhoff program:
      http://www.umbc.edu/meyerhoff/

He should strongly consider some of the GREAT summer programs in Math like AMSSI http://www.amssi.org/ or Dr. Carlos Castillo Chavez’ very famous applied math summer program at the University of Arizona: http://mtbi.asu.edu/. In addition, he should plan to attend the SACNAS Math Institute, held in the Fall every year. Here are some highlights from last year’s conference:
      http://www.ams.org/ams/sacnas2009-mtg.html

SACNAS has travel fellowships, if he applies and gets one, his expenses for the 2010 conference will be covered. http://www.sacnas.org/confnew/confclient/

I hope that helps! Best wishes to you and your family!

Also, I’ve had tostones, but not the other items. I’m going to dinner with some friends from the UPR tonight, so maybe I’ll try something new!

      Take care!
