This past week, our contingent from the University System of Maryland participated in international meetings that were part of the Latin and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions in Costa Rica.

As part of the conference, I had a change to lead the Organization of American States/Engineering for the Americas (OAS/EftA) Forum for diversity at LACCEI.

The online conversation on Women in STEM and Career-Life Balance/Integration was seeded by women in STEM in the U.S. The panel and participants in Costa Rica, as well as others within the LACCEI leadership were happy to learn that the in-person panel was accompanied by an online Twitter conversation. Many at the conference said that they were pleased to hear and learn what was going on in our session, especially since they were in other sessions at the time.

Technical talks covered cyber security, humanitarian engineering, engineering pedagogy, critical thinking, and cultural competency. Excursions included historical and ecological activities to encourage thoughts about global citizenship and sustainability. The LSAMP website, and our LACCEI blog will be populated with even more information over the coming days, once everyone returns to the states and has a chance to process the results of the experience. Dr. David Delaine, former National Science Foundation Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) student at Northeastern, and LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow at Drexel University, (Fulbright Fellow in Brazil, and current professor at Ohio State) served as the external faculty Mentor-in-Residence for our group. He was one of the keynote speakers for the LACCEI FLEEI student forum, gave a 1/2 day orientation session developed especially for our students, and was a wonderful mentor for our students throughout the trip. Dr. Delaine shared personal stories of his Costa Rican roots, and challenged the students to think about humanitarian engineering and leadership.
