This past week, our contingent from the University System of Maryland participated in international meetings that were part of the Latin and Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions in Costa Rica.
Our full agenda with the pre-conference activities, student forum, and the blog posts that accompanied the event can be found here:

As part of the conference, I had a change to lead the Organization of American States/Engineering for the Americas (OAS/EftA) Forum for diversity at LACCEI.
The hashtags that accompany the conversation are #LACCEI;

The online conversation on Women in STEM and Career-Life Balance/Integration was seeded by women in STEM in the U.S. The panel and participants in Costa Rica, as well as others within the LACCEI leadership were happy to learn that the in-person panel was accompanied by an online Twitter conversation. Many at the conference said that they were pleased to hear and learn what was going on in our session, especially since they were in other sessions at the time.
Many thanks to our online session host and co-hosts:
- Dr. Meagan Pollack, Host, Director of Professional Development for the National Alliance for Partnerships in Equity
- Dr. Marquita Qualls, Co-host, Past president of NOBBChE, Principal: Entropia
- Dr. Christine Grant, Co-host, Professor, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, North Carolina State University; Associate Dean – College of Engineering, NCSU; Principal: Leveraged Empowerment. Get the book: Success Strategies from Women in STEM
We also appreciate the participation of VanguardSTEM and their online community: VanguardSTEM – Conversations with Women of Color in STEM
The hashtags for this conversation are #LACCEI & #ThinkBigDiversity, between July 21, 2016 and July 24, 2016. Thank you to our online and in-person speakers, leads, and participants!
Some additional tweets are shared here. More photos and articles will be posted as part of the University System of Maryland’s LSAMP Website: https://usmlsamp.wordpress.com/
Technical talks covered cyber security, humanitarian engineering, engineering pedagogy, critical thinking, and cultural competency. Excursions included historical and ecological activities to encourage thoughts about global citizenship and sustainability. The LSAMP website, and our LACCEI blog will be populated with even more information over the coming days, once everyone returns to the states and has a chance to process the results of the experience. A few photos and tweets are posted below.
There was a full 4 hours of conversation on Twitter for the Career-Life Balance panel. The University of Maryland College Park LSAMP team assisted with the tweeting on-site in Costa Rica to accompany the online conversation.

Dr. David Delaine, former National Science Foundation Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) student at Northeastern, and LSAMP Bridge to the Doctorate Fellow at Drexel University, (Fulbright Fellow in Brazil, and current professor at Ohio State) served as the external faculty Mentor-in-Residence for our group. He was one of the keynote speakers for the LACCEI FLEEI student forum, gave a 1/2 day orientation session developed especially for our students, and was a wonderful mentor for our students throughout the trip. Dr. Delaine shared personal stories of his Costa Rican roots, and challenged the students to think about humanitarian engineering and leadership.
